Awesome quotes, add your own

The character truest to itself becomes eccentric rather than immovably centered, as Emerson defined the noble character of the hero. At the edge, the certainty of borders gives way. We are more subject to invasions, less able to mobilize defenses, less sure of who we really are, even as we may be perceived by others as a person of character. The dislocation of self from center to indefinite edge merges us more with the world, so that we can feel “blest by everything.”

ashleigh, could you share what that quote means to you? i am finding it a little confusing. is it saying that when someone is most themself, then they become off balance? or that being centered is too limiting and we should live at the edge? i don't get it. perhaps it is from a larger context?

i do love the anais nin quote, queenie, it very clearly cuts to an understanding of the inevitability of taking on challenges and change.

James Hillman is a transpersonal psychologist, if that helps at all. It is about the hero's journey.
It really appealed to me although I don't know if I can explain it.

I also think it has to do with the little self becoming one with the bigger self. Or the no-self , like in Buddhism. And how the edges of being a self get blurred at the edge, the edge of enlightenment or the edge of consciousness, any edge really. Living at that edge point as a human, things change . Most people never go through it. It is the hero's journey and not for everyone.

Anais nin just seems to resonate with me a lot. She was certainly a free spirit and a character.

I think James Hillman is trying to describe what happens when the truest self emerges. He also thinks that that is what the hero's journey is about, emerging true self. That's what I get at least.
I'm reading a lot of James Hillman right now and he's trippy to say the least. I love it though.

I had heard that from Anais Nin but didn't know it was her. It comes up in therapy a lot about how people wait until the pain of staying the same is so bad that they have to change. But maybe we can move beyond that someday and let change happen in us as it happens. Why do we resist so much? What is there to hold onto that seems so important? It has to do with self, and my quote about self. This solid self doesn't exist really. But we try to hold onto it anyway.

it is weird how sometimes if we hold on too tight, life just "cracks" us open because we are meant to be flowing beings and we get scared and hold on so tightly.

It would be nice to make shifts and changes that are for our highest good without having to be hit by a mac truck.

is it talking about how being open and flexible is more of a hero's journey. If you are closed off and rigid it is impossible to flow with things?

My answer is “Because that's what love does.”
To think that we need sadness or outrage

        Oh Kaalii
I get happy just to see your icon ( and contributions ) in my posts. I think when I meet Ryan Gosling we will come to see you.
And when you meet Josh Homme you must stop by. You can have a vacation at my place in LA.

Yes, Carpe Dime, we are doing it.

I think the caterpillar has some knowledge of the butterfly it's becoming. Like the seed knows of the mighty oak tree that is it's destiny.
